Where Did He Go is a pop-up interactive picture book that uses Memory Jar as a process to cope with loss.
Using nature and turtles as the theme and protagonists respectively, this picture book Where Did He Go shares how a young turtle copes with grief and loss. It does so by acknowledging puddle jumping, the guilt and the feeling of confusion that 5-7 year old children face.
A method used by art and child therapists, building a Memory Jar, has been actively used to act as a method to coping grief. In this book, the children help the turtle collect objects from the ocean and build a memory jar for his friend who was captured and could not make it to the ocean with him.
A lot of children’s picture book authors and illustrators use animals as protagonists to connect with the children.
Using materials like velcro and playing with simple pop-up techniques, this book introduces and reinforces the value of a memory jar, while making the experience of understanding about grief and loss simple and relatable for a child.
This book was hand build and hardbound during the course of the project.
